In the morning, I do some media monitoring over my first coffee of the day. I’ll scrawl through pretty much every news outlet you can imagine for anything related to the campaigns on our Accelerator programme. I have a bunch of Google alerts set up for each of them, so I check them, and do some light reading about goings-on in the world of politics and current affairs. It’s important to stay plugged in so that we don’t miss an opportunity that might help our Accelerator campaigns reach their campaign goals.

“We might be grinning like Cheshire cats here but we were devastated that it was Chloe’s last day!” – Jerome

Today, I’ve got some meetings in London so I get the tube in and head to my workspace. On arrival, I get another coffee and settle in for my morning catch-up with our executive director Kat Sladden. One of the benefits of being a small team is that whenever I need advice, Kat is only a click away. For the past few weeks, we’ve been working with an amazing freelancer called Chloe Green that has been helping us with the launch of our Accelerator programme. She also moonlights as a celebrant – you might have seen her in BBC One’s Big Gay Wedding with Tom Allen. Today is our last day working together and we’re gutted to see her go!

“Zelda is a force of nature – which made getting a screenshot of her sitting still incredibly difficult but we managed it.”Jerome

Once our morning catch-up is done, we meet with Zelda Perkins and Cait Sim from Can’t Buy My Silence, one of our amazing Accelerator campaigns. They’ve been campaigning to outlaw abusive non-disclosure agreements and in the past year we’ve supported them to develop a campaign strategy that has shifted opinion amongst lawmakers and the business and legal communities massively. This afternoon, we’re doing some scenario planning for an important review that will be coming out soon that Can’t Buy My Silence have contributed to – watch this space!

“I’ve come to really value the small moments with campaigners – like getting lunch with the nannies in Chinatown!” – Jerome

After my meeting with Can’t Buy My Silence, I have an in-person session with Sara and Berta from the Nanny Solidarity Network, another one of our Accelerator campaigns. We’re working on an exciting corporate campaign – which I can’t say too much about – but today we’re doing a parliamentary strategy session designed to help them identify some supporters, and learn a little more about the political process in Britain. We do a couple of hours and then head into Chinatown for lunch. It’s the little moments – the time spent getting to know our Accelerator campaigners as people – that I value the most each day.

“I taught the nannies how to use Hansard and they taught me how to use the timer function on my phone’s camera.” – Jerome

After lunch, we try to put some of the lessons we learned into practice and put together some copy for the parliamentarians we identified as potential supporters. At the beginning of our Accelerator programme, these are the kinds of tasks that a member of the Breakthrough team might do for campaigners – but a big part of the programme is making ourselves obsolete by equipping campaigners with the skills they need to make change themselves. It’s really gratifying watching the campaigners we work with grow week-to-week: and the nannies are a prime example, they’ve come such a long way since the beginning of the programme!

“Want to hear from some campaigners with a track-record of holding corporations to account? Come to our event at the Conduit!” – Jerome

Before I head home, I swing by the Conduit. It’s a cool space where you can meet other people that are working towards social change. They put on great events. In a couple of weeks, Breakthrough are putting on the latest event in the Link for Change series: Tackling Corporate Power with some really interesting speakers – Martha Dark from Foxglove, Paula Caruana Galizia from Tortoise, and Garfield Hylton. In their own ways, they’ve all taken on the rich and powerful, and I’m looking forward to hearing what they’ve all learned from the experience. If you’ve not got your free ticket yet, you can do so here.

With that, my day is over and I head home to do it all over again tomorrow. Thanks for spending the day with me!
