Before you apply to our Accelerator programme, here’s a quick checklist of the qualities we’re excited to see. If you tick ‘yes’ to these five questions, we absolutely want to hear from you.

You’re seeking social change and you share our values

At Breakthrough, we’re committed to winning social change. That means we work with people who want to make the world a better, fairer, kinder, more equal place for everyone. We wouldn’t work with campaigns who are pursuing something we perceived to be prejudiced or discriminatory (e.g. racist, sexist, transphobic etc).

You have direct experience of the thing you’re campaigning on, or want to change

We exist to support campaigns that are led by individuals or groups with a deeply personal connection to the issue. Perhaps you’ve lived through it yourself or you have been a victim to a social injustice. If it’s about a proposed change in the law, you would be affected by it.

For example, we work with Can’t Buy My Silence – a campaign group led by people who want to ban exploitative Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) because they were personally forced to sign them.

For campaign groups or small organisations, it’s okay if your employees or volunteers don’t have direct lived experience – but the campaign should be led by people who do.

You have a clear campaign goal

When you’re accepted onto the Accelerator programme, we love to hit the ground running. You might not have a thought-through plan (or even the faintest idea of how to create change!), but you know what it is you want to change.

To use some examples from our Accelerator alumni:

Can’t Buy My Silence want to change the law to ban NDAs.

Nanny Solidarity Network want to win workers’ rights for nannies and au pairs – for example, a living wage for au pairs and regulations on childcare apps.

The Collective Punishment Campaign want to raise awareness of and tackle the impact of parental imprisonment on families and children.

It’s okay if you don’t have a specific law change in mind – we just want to hear you talk about clear goals and hopes.

You want to start making change and you’ve got the commitment and capacity to get going

We want you to get the most out of our Accelerator programme, which means you’ll need to have the necessary time and energy to give it. For example, we tend to have fortnightly check-ins with our campaign, and in September we’ll host three strategy workshops to get your strategy shaped up.

Of course, there’s always wiggle room – sometimes you might need to reschedule or miss a session. We’re a small and agile team, and we’re flexible. But you’ll need to be ready and willing to put in the time to make transformational change.

Sometimes we meet campaigners who would be perfect for our Accelerator in a year or two’s time. We’ll always be open with you if we think you’re likely to achieve more on our Accelerator at a later date.

The Breakthrough team’s experience and expertise is well-matched to your campaign goals

We have decades of campaign experience but we also know our limits! Before we accept you onto our Accelerator programme, we’ll always ask ourselves if we’re the right people to support you with your campaign goals.

For example, we know how to campaign on social issues in the UK. We have experience of recruiting supporters, writing a strategy, winning media attention, lobbying MPs and decision-makers, and finding the right message for your campaign.

We might not be the best people to help with campaigns who need support on things that wildly differ to those skills – but don’t hesitate to get in touch to check.

Applications open now! Deadline: Monday 3rd June.
