Our Accelerator programme is the first of its kind, so you might have questions about what it is, how it works, and what to expect from it.

We’ve pulled together some of the most-often asked questions about the Accelerator that we hope might help answer some of them.

> What is Breakthrough’s Accelerator programme?

Our Accelerator is a year-long bootcamp for campaigners who have huge potential and want to get serious about making change. It turns budding campaigns into forces to be reckoned with.

> What kind of support does the Accelerator provide?

We support campaigners to deliver transformational change. In practice, that can be anything from helping you to develop your campaign strategy, securing press coverage, providing copywriting support, access to Breakthrough’s expert network, as well as delivering bespoke training and workshops tailored to your specific needs.

> Can Breakthrough give my campaign financial backing?

No, we can’t provide direct funding to groups. We provide valuable, pro-bono expert support, coaching and connections but not funding. Where we can, we’ll work with groups to introduce them to funders over the course of the programme.

> Do we have to pay for Accelerator support?

No, the Accelerator is completely free. Our costs are covered from philanthropic donors and trusts and foundations.

> How long does Accelerator support last?

The Accelerator is a year-long programme starting in September and ending in June.

> Who can apply for the Accelerator?

Our Accelerator programme exists to support UK-based campaigns led by individuals with direct experience of injustice. Your campaign can be led by an individual or a small team, volunteers, a community group, a family group, or a registered charity.

> Who can’t apply for the Accelerator?

If you or your organisation doesn’t have direct, lived experience of the injustice you’re campaigning on, or is party political or affiliated to a political group, our Accelerator is not the programme for you. Sorry!

> What does it mean to have “direct experience” or “lived experience” of injustice?

It means the issue you’re campaigning to change has had an impact on your life, the life or lives of people close to you, or your community. If you’re campaigning to prevent something from happening, like a new law passing, it would affect you.

> How do I apply for the Accelerator?

> I’ve submitted my application for the Accelerator, what happens next?

Whether your application has been successful or not, you’ll receive a confirmation email from us. Check your junk! If your application is successful, you’ll progress to the next stage and there’ll be a short video interview with the Breakthrough team.

> How flexible is Accelerator support?

We try to make reasonable accommodations for campaigns on the programme. For example, we can offer training and support in-person or online, and hold occasional out-of-hours meetings.

> What will be asked of us while we’re on the Accelerator?

There are some minimum requirements for our Accelerator programme which we set out here [Link].

> What happens once Accelerator support ends?

Don’t worry, we won’t just disappear overnight. In the last few months on the programme, we’ll work with you to ensure that your transition off the Accelerator is a smooth one.
