The Accelerator programme is a year-long relationship with our team, where we work together to take your campaign to the next level.

We expect a certain level of commitment and capacity from our campaigners, so here are a few pointers about what we’d need to see from you.

The Nature of Our Support

We provide support to groups in the form of training, workshops, strategic advice, introductions to experts in our network and delivery and capacity support. Our inputs are offered on an advisory basis – and campaign leadership and decision making is undertaken by and the responsibility of the group itself.

We don’t provide grants or funding to groups on our programmes. Where we are able, we’ll introduce groups to funders in our network but we can’t guarantee funding will result from those introductions.

The majority of our sessions will be online over zoom or our team will travel to meet you in person. If you need accessibility support to access online zoom sessions, please speak to us and we can discuss ways to support you.

As a non-profit that receives funding from charitable partners, we are unable to support activities that break the law or that are party political.

Our Ways of Working

We ask for a named point of contact throughout the programme and we ask for active participation. You’ll need to dedicate 2 hours a fortnight to take part in sessions, as well as work outside sessions to move your campaign forward.

We’ll agree with you a specific schedule and if you’re unable to attend a meeting or session, just let us know 24 hours in advance. If you are going to be out of contact for 10 working days or more, let us know.

Inform us of any difficulties that arise that could damage the reputation of your campaign – for example if you receive any threats of legal action, regulatory investigation or criticism in the media.

Reporting Where You’re At

We’ll need to track where you started and where you ended, so we’ll ask you to complete a short form or speak to us about your current campaigning knowledge and capacity. You’ll do this again at the end of the support period. This is to allow us to evaluate, report back to our funders and continue to improve our support offer.

Keeping Everyone Safe

If your work involves contact with young people aged under 18 or vulnerable adults, you must uphold the highest standards of child protection and safeguarding.

You’ll have to adhere to our safeguarding policy and if you have concerns about a young person or vulnerable adult you’re in contact with, you should let us know immediately.

Showing Everyone Respect

We expect our campaigners to uphold the highest standards of respect in all interactions with Breakthrough, our partners and in public – including online.

This includes:

  • Violence: We don’t support activities, language or content that incites, glorifies, supports or encourages violence against anyone — and this includes support for violent groups or individuals.
  • Hate speech: We consider hate speech to be any content that directly or indirectly attacks an entire group of people because of a characteristic they share. We include in this definition coded language that is used with the intent or impact of harming a group of people.
  • Bullying or harassment: We will not tolerate harassment in any form, in person and/or through written communication or social media. When working to persuade decision-makers in your campaign, focus on people’s actions rather than their personal characteristics.

Pausing or Ending Our Support

We are a small team with limited resources, so we want to make sure our efforts are being directed to where they can make the most difference, and towards groups that are able to benefit from that support.

We’ve never had to do this before, but we may have to pause or end your involvement in the programme if:

  • You’re not responsive, eg. we don’t hear from you for 4 weeks or more
  • There’s a significant change in leadership
  • There’s a significant group disagreement or split
  • You don’t show commitment to the programme. We recognise that trying, failing and learning are all key parts of developing as a campaigner so changing plans will be a part of the journey. There may also be times when you or some of your group need to take a break. This is all ok and to be expected. We just need a good-faith commitment to your campaign and to our programme.

If you have questions or concerns about the support being provided or your ability to commit to the Accelerator, you can reach out to your point of contact at Breakthrough. We’ll always try to work with you to make adjustments.

Applications open now! Deadline: Monday 3rd June.

You can apply for Breakthrough’s Accelerator programme using this short Typeform.
